Nor Cal Riding 2007

Another podcast is up!

The Dakar podcasts inspired to "think global, act local" so this time here is a podcast about the local scene.

Last year I started to think about the things I like to do, and it seems like almost everything is a fight. Local parks always have pressure to limit trails for mountain biking, the fishing seasons get shorter, while the politico's do nothing to help restore things like the salmon runs in the rivers, and of course offroad motorcycling is under constant pressure. Even some of the places we have and pay for with our park fees and taxes are run so poorly it is sad.

All that leads to an us versus them attitude among lots of groups that should spend more time in agreement on things. If an environmentalist and an offroad user, (mountain bike or motorcycle, whatever) really sat down and looked at a checklist of important things they are concerned about they would find lots of agreement. There are good groups that are trying to work together for all these recreational activities and they try to bring all sides of the issues to "the big round table."

Finger pointing at each other does no good.

So I wanted to do this to show the love for the sport and kids and family values that we who ride all know about, but I think others might not ever think are such a big part of what we do, and also show how popular this activity is, and how close a place like Club Moto is for us to enjoy year round.

Offroad motorcycling has exploded in popularity over the last 10 years. Thousands of people come together for events all over Northern California. Big Rick from KFOG interviews 3 people behind 3 cool events/places for offroad motorcycle riders. Scott Link is behind a new event at Thunderhill Raceway for the AMA District 36 Cross Country series. It is a new place to host an event. That is a really big deal for riders. Then Pete from P&D Promotions talks about the famous Hollister National, round 1 of the AMA National series. Riders and factory teams from all over the country come to race, and it is really spectator friendly. Pete is also behind the effort to open more riding land at the OHV Park in Hollister. Kirk Smith has operated motocross tracks in the Bay Area for years. He is behind the reopening of Club Moto in Livermore right here in the Bay Area! They have 3 tracks for all levels, you can teach your kid to ride on the pee wee track, maybe ride the beginner track, and there is a really fun big outdoor track for the more experienced riders.

Offroad riders are great people. They take their kids with them on weekend camping trips, and love the environment. Have a listen and you'll see what I mean.
